Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband just had a kyphoplasty procedure done on his L5 vertebrae, the doctor sent biopsy to lab, pathology report came back possible plasmacytoma doc now wants him to see oncologist to have blood, urine and cat scan tests done to rule it out. I am very panicked. Are there other things it could be. Everything I read online about it is very scary. Please any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Waiting until our appointment on Monday is excruciating.
I can understand your concern. I am afraid to repeat the information that you have found online suggesting that plasmacytoma indicates presence of malignant or cancerous mass of tissue growing within the soft tissue of the axial skeleton. The extent and stage of it has to be confirmed by other extensive investigations.
However, radiation has shown good results in earlier stages of the plasmacytoma. More than 80% of such cases have been shown to be controlled by radiation therapy. So the road does not end at the diagnosis of the tumor. I would advise you to be strong so that you can support your husband in going through the treatment phase.
Even though waiting period in such cases can be excruciating in such stages, you can use the time in researching about what you should expect and how you can deal with the consequences of the disease and treatment etc so that you can be prepared for the next step before you have to take it. Your husband will need your support the most and you will have to be strong, calm and patient to provide it.
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic in your time of need. Let me know if I can provide you with any other help. Take care of you and your husband!
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
