What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

What does it mean when it says on your MRI for your cervical spine that you have grossly age appropriate parenchymal volume loss? It also says I have spinal stenosis there and in my lumbar with severe DDD along with facet atrophy? I do have several small and large tarlov cysts in my lumbar that are affecting my sacrum with significant bone erosion too. Over the year my body has worsened, severe pain all over. I fall often from pain and my spine is curved by now. I m also being tested for an autoimmune or connective tissue disorder. Any thoughts?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I passed carefully through your question and would explain as follows:
- the bone volume loss is related to osteoporosis
- the spinal canal stenosis indicates that surgery may be needed, to improve your gait and the pain
- the tarlow cysts are a common finding, which could lead to pain. I would recommend taking pregabaline or gabapentine for the pain. Regarding the connective tissue disorder, I agree that these changes could be related to such disorder. But I would recommend checking calcium and vitamin D plasma levels, coupled with bone densitometry. Consulting with a spinal surgeon may be needed for the spinal canal stenosis. You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
