What Does The Following Transvaginal Ultrasound Report Indicate?

I had transvaginal ultrasound yesterday and the result was Findings: there is a single, intrauterine fetus, floating, with crown rump length of 11.9mm compatible with 7 weeks & 3 days sonographic age. Real time scan shows no demonstrable cardiac activity. Adnexal areas and posterior cul de sac are unremarkable. Impression: early fetal demise What is the further explanation of this? Do i need to go for a second opinion from the other doctor? Thank you

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Ultrasound is suggestive of a failed pregnancy. normally, usg at 6 weeks should be able to shiw cardiac activity.

Absent cardiac activity at pregnancy 7 wk 3 days indicates that the embryo did not develop a heart beat at tge expected time, which suggests that the pregnancy has failed. you need to undergo definitive management now.

Either medical and surgical modes can be taken, to ensure that the uterus is emptied. the uterus needs to be emptied, to ensure there are no chances of infections or any complications because if the failed embryonic tissue lying inside it.

Please get usg repeated after 7 days to confirm there has been no growth and. that cardiac activity is still unidentified; after which management should be done to empty the uterus of its contents.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Dr. Rohan Shanker Tiwari
