At age 59, now 61, I went to ER with a migraine. They did a CT and said it was normal but I never looked at the report. Now I m looking at it and wondering about all the scary stuff I find on the www about this phrase from the report: Ventricles and sulci are mildly prominent for age. hmmm...... This is the report: TECHNIQUE: Contiguous 5 mm axial images of the head were obtained from the skull base to vertex. No contrast administered. FINDINGS: The ventricles and sulci are mildly prominent for age. No ventricular shift or mass effect. Minimal patchy low density in the deep/subcortical periventricular white matter. No hemorrhage or extra-axial collection. Posterior fossa and brain stem unremarkable. The visualized paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells are clear. No acute calvarial abnormality. IMPRESSION: 1.No evidence of acute intracranial hemorrhage or mass. 2.Mild chronic small vessel ischemic changes and atrophy Have I already begun Dementia?
small vessel ischemic changes are age related and are due to hardening and blockage of very small blood vessels in our brain. since you have mild changes, i dont think it will lead to dementia. with advancing age, the brain decreases in size in most people.
