What Does Swelling In The Parotid Gland Indicate?

The left side-- I think where the parotid gland is- swells up on the outside after eating sometimes. I feel no lump and just 2 days ago went to the dentist where nothing was indicated--had the complete scan done where they go completely around the head, then also the oral cancer exam. Dentist said it could be that bacteria could be trapped inside that gland....I had the right parotid gland removed 35 years ago because of a tumor- benign--but there was a tiny lump there. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Hello,

Swelling in parotid gland seems to be due to stone in salivary gland duct and due to obstruction in salivary flow causing retention of salivary secretions in gland causing swelling.

Need not to worry. Visit dentist once and dentist might be able move the stone by applying heat and gently massaging the affected area.

Otherwise removal of salivary duct stone is needed to be removed to prevent swelling. Visit oral and maxillofacial surgeon as well if symptoms keeps on persisting.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Harry Maheshwari
