What Does Swelling In The Gums After Tooth Extraction Indicate?

I have a patient on Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim for systemic issues prior. we are a dental practice, she had extraction 2 days ago, did not give her the normal amoxicillin, would this have made a difference, patient return with pain in extracted site, an xray was taken, socket it clean, some swelling and tenderness around area. but we are wondering if there could be a cross reaction with giving her amoxicillin/clindamycin instead or together.

Hello,

You have symptoms of swelling in the gums after tooth extraction which seems to be due to inflammation of gingiva leading to gingivitis, could be excessive tissue laceration and infection.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you maintain proper oral hygiene and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. Take plenty of fluids. You should consult the dentist for proper examination, and rule out other causes. The doctor may irrigate the socket for 3-4 days regularly and may prescribe antibiotics along with anti-inflammatory.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
