Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Swelling And A Lump Under The Upper Lip Indicate?
My 2 year old grandson has a knot under his upper lip and is swollen. When he smiles his mouth is pulled to one side like a stroke patient. He has a sinus infection at the time but his little immune system is very weak because he seems to catch everything .
A lump or knot on the inside of the inner lip can be due to a mucous cyst formation of a mucocele. If it is painful and looks like having pus, then it can be an abscess. However, as per your explanation, it looks more like a mucocele. Please send me the pictures of the lump so that I can advise you further. For swelling of lip, you can do cool compresses over the lip.
A swollen lip can also be due to an allergic reaction to any food or medicine. So my suggestion is to consult an emergency room and get evaluated. If it is a mucocele, then it can get better soon on its own, but if it tends to increase, then surgical treatment has to be done to remove it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
