What Does Severe Pain In The Lower Back And Legs Indicate?

For the last 2 months I have had increasing pain in my lower back down my left leg to my toes. It is complicated by a feeling like hitting your elbow, “funny bone.” This occurs constantly with sudden increasing intensity even when sleeping. There is no relief from this walking, sitting, standing or laying down. Ibuprofen doesn’t affect the pain level. 2 years ago I had a similar but lesser pain which was treated with shots in my back. They had no effect. This pain with additional syptoms is affecting my quality of life and my ability to function. I have an appt. with my doctor in 3.5 weeks. Appreciate any possible answers.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

So far as symptoms narrated here, there can be possible issue with nerve compression over lower lumbar spine level from spondylosis or else; deficiency of Vitamin B12, calcium or others in the body. Till you consult your doctor for special evaluation, I recommend to use local analgesic spray or ointment with Tramadol Hydrochloride (which will require prescription) tablet for pain control.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
