What Does Resting Heart Rate 96bpm Suggest?

Im 19 weeks pregnant 5'9" and my resting heart rate is 96bpm is this normal or should I be worried? I have had an enormous amount of stress the past few weeks which have caused me to not eat and be throwing up. I have gone to the hospital where they found a heartbeat but did no ultrasound to determine if the baby is in distress.

Hello. A normal adult heart rate can be anywhere from 60-100. A pregnant woman's heart beat may be a bit faster than normal, since pregnancy is considered to be a "hypermetabolic state," meaning there is acceleration in the expectant mother's metabolism in order for her body to compensate for the extra blood volume and normal changes that carrying a fetus will cause. A heart rate of 96 is not a concern, as it is in the normal range. If you were dehydrated from not eating and throwing up, your heart rate will increase to compensate once again, but the treatment for that is to increase your fluid intake to re-hydrate your body.

If the appetite doesn't return to normal, or if the vomiting continues more than a day or two, or if your resting heart rate increases above 100, then I would recommend contacting your doctor or returning to the Emergency Room.

Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy!
