What Does Proteinurea Means?

My son had a routine physical this past week. During the physical he was given an urinalysis. At the end of the physical when I was given a receipt and a script for blood work (which we could have done at our convenience) I saw the word proteinuria. Wasn t sure what it was (had an idea) but we had already left the office so I couldn t inquire. The Dr (who has seen my son since age 3) never mentioned any problem with his urine. My initial thought that it might be insurance related. He is a very thorough doctor and blood work script was routine with annual physical. He wished my son good luck during his upcoming season and signed off on physical with no restrictions . What do you think? Also i plan on having blood work done within a month. Thank you

Urologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i must define the medical term proteinuria means, excessive leak of protein in the urine, above normal limit of 150mg / day.
In urine routine test, he may have found, excess level of albumin, which is a form of protein. Typically, the next test to accurately assess protein loss in urine, is to check 24 hour urine protein.
With an ultrasound scan of the abdomen, and blood urea, and creatinine test, one can get a good idea, of source of protein loss. You're welcome to send a copy of reports here, in my name, to get an expert opinion.
