What Does Presence Of Blood In Vomit Indicate?

I threw up this morning and there was blood. I was sweaty and clammy. I laid down and about 30 minutes later I had a bowel movement. It was normal with no blood. However, since then I ve had 2 more bowel movements that have had blood in them and it looked similar to coffee grounds. I have no pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Blood in vomit and coffee ground stools clearly suggest an upper gastrointestinal bleeding most probably due to gastritis.

Dark-colored stools are concerning for blood that has been processed by acid. Usually, upper gastrointestinal bleeds can cause dark stool because the blood sits in the stomach where gastric acid is located which usually happens in cases of gastric ulceration in hyper acidic conditions.

I will suggest talk to your primary care physician or consult a gastroenterologist at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
