What Does Presence Of Blood In Urine Indicate?

58 year old female. I ve had blood in my urine every few weeks for a year. Many confirmed UTI s. I ve had X-rays of my kidneys and everything normal. Now I m 1x weekly vaginal Estrada for a month. Testosterone injection money. No other meds and no other health issues. I go to a nurse practitioner and I m thinking I should be referred to a urologist now. What could possibly be causing my problem?

Hello,

Welcome to health care magic.

I have read your question completely and understand your concerns.

Blood in urine is most likely in your case due to a UTI, as you mentioned that the UTis were confirmed ( assuming that confirmation means that the urine culture and microscopy was positive for organisms). Blood in the urine could also be due to a kidney/bladder stone.

Did you ever have blood in urine without an UTI??

If you had blood in the urine without a confirmed UTI on 2 out of 3 occasions, you need to see a urologist. I feel you should be seeing a urologist even otherwise as you are having recurrent UTI over the past one year. The urologist would examine you and do further investigations to know the cause of the blood in urine and recurrent UTI.

X ray of the kidneys is a very basic investigation. It being normal does not mean that you are not having an abnormality. You may need other imaging investigations like an ultrasound or a CT/MRI. You may even have a cystoscope ( passing a probe with a camera at one end into your bladder, just like endoscopy).

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you.
