What Does Persistent High Fever In A Child Indicate?

My daughter is 8 and has had a temperature for 5 days now between 99.5 and 100.6. She went to urgent care and doesn t have an ear infection, lungs sound fine, throat looked good. Couldn t find anything but she s never had a fever for 5 days without it being something we could take care of. She s also tired and just doesn t feel great. advice?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. the most common cause of persistent fever in young girls is urinary tract infection (UTI). Kindly get urine tested. In case there is UTI your child may need to take an antibiotic coarse like Norflox or Septran for one week.

In case no UTI is detected, other blood tests like Complete blood count, malarial parasite test, widal test for typhoid, dengue test for dengue, platelets, peripheral smear, lepto etc has to be done.

If everything is normal it may be just a viral fever. Sometimes viral fever will last for a week or two. Just Paracetamol will take care.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
