What Does Pain In The Sternum Indicate?

I m having a dull/achy pain in my sternum, which worsens when coughing, or taking a deep breath. I ve also been unable to down food or water as it appears that whatever is causing the pain is partially blocking the passageway to the stomach and it is very uncomfortable to eat or drink as a result.
