What Does Pain In The Ears And Jaw Indicate?

Hello I have severe facial jaw and ear pain... The point of the pain is in the jaw joint. I do not feel it is TMJ as this keeps re-occurring periodically. I have read the symptoms of TMJ and that does not sound like what I am experiencing. The pain runs down my jaw line and at times the bottom of my jaw goes numb and stays that way for several days if not weeks. I mask the pain with ibuprofen or Aleve in 4 - 6 hours intervals.. The pain feels like I have a toothache but I don t have a tooth where most of the pain is. (almost like phantom pain in a tooth I do not have). I have been dealing with this for the past 3 - 4 years... It is always on the same side of my face with is the right side... It starts out as a ear ache and then slowly travels down my face. It can last weeks with each occurrence. Please help... :-(

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

If the origin of the point of pain is TMJ then it is probably due to jaw joint dysfunction only even if it is happening periodically..

Secondly periodic episodes of pain can also be due to nerve related problem like Trigeminal Neuralgia..

So my suggestion is to first of all get an x ray of the jaw joints done to rule out if it is due to jaw joints or not..

In case if the jaw joints come out to be fine then you should consult a Neurophysician and get an MRI Scan done to rule out the nerve related problems..

As of now take painkillers only if it is necessary and also take soft meals and avoid excessive mouth opening..
Avoid stress as it can aggravate the condition..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
