What Does My CT Scan Test Report Indicate?

Hi I had a ct scan of my chest. They found a oblong lobular mass behind my breast bone. It measured 4cm by 4cm by 5.5 cm. they were going to do a ct biopsy. But Dr wants to see me instead. His nurse said that it is only 50/50 they would do the biopsy. I am 72 and a young 72 I have had breast cancer 11 years ago. I had chemo at that time as well as surgery and radiation. The chemo did some damage to mt heart. I have cardiomyopathy. Is this why they won t do the biopsy as well, or are they likely not to do surgery. Please advise.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
An oblong lobular mass behind breast bone on CT scan needs to investigated with aspiration cytology, biopsy or both.
The nature of oblong mass needs to be known before any treated can be given.
A previous history of breast cancer is relevant because this mass could be a recurrence of breast cancer.
Other mass lesions behind the breast bone could be due to lymphoma, teratoma, or some soft tissue neoplasm.
Biopsy and aspiration cytology are safe procedures and are done under radiological guidance (eg CT guidance) in deep seated lesions.
A history of cardiomyopathy is not a contra-indication for aspiration cytology or biopsy.
Thus, I suggest you to consult your doctor for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus management.

Thanks and take care
