What Does Low Platelet Count Mean?

I have gastroparesis with an implanted gastric pacer. I have a PICC line, and have been receiving weekly Fe Sucrose infusions for a very low iron level. My latest blood levels show a low platelet count. What could that mean? Thank you, Beth. Age 34

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history Of gastroparesis with gastric pacemaker, take weekly ferrous sucrose infusions, and now have low platelet count.
If only platelets are low and wbc abs RBC are normal then the cause is obviously related to platelet alone.
The commonest causes are:
Viral infections.
Dengue by the is commonest cause.
Bone marrow depression can be cause.
I would advise you the following:
Repeat the tests as it usually recovers over time.
Watch for the causes.
Consult a Physician for clinical evaluation and further management as per the reports.
Watch for ecchymoses, red spots, bleeding tendencies, if they develop you may need platelet transfusion.. Carry on further management as per the cause.
