What Does Large Venous Lake In A Sonography Report Indicate?
I m 26 weeks pregnant and just had a3d ultrasound the sonographer asked me if I had bleeding or spotting , but I haven t then she said she saw a large venous lake and she was a little worried it could be placental abruption what are the chances of this being real and the risks?
3D ultrasound is NOT the standard of care for evaluation of the placenta. It makes pretty visual images and is frequently used as an adjunct to regular ultrasound. However diagnosis of placental abruption is very difficult with ultrasound in general, and also inaccurate in 50 percent of cases. Venous lakes are common normal findings and are NOT diagnostic for abruption, which also usually presents with symptoms like painful contractions, fundal tenderness and vaginal bleeding.
So I would not worry about the placental lakess especially if you have no symptoms. I would discuss this also with your prenatal care provider, but unless the doctor who interprets the ultrasound is concerned, you really shouldn't be alarmed by comments from the technician.
I hope this information was reassuring and I was able to adequately answer your question, and that my advice was helpful.
Best of luck with the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
