What Does Lacunar Infarct Mean In MRI?
My husband, 34 y/o male has a 2 week history of vertiginous symptoms now reported with left hand weakness. He has an MRI done and we have the results. It says " Evaluation of the hwite matter demondtrates faint inctreased FLAIR-T2 signal in the periventricular white matter radiating away from the ventricles. A chronic 6 mm lacunar infarct is noted in the left lentiform nuclei...." I have tried doing my own research and all I can find is that a lacunar infarct is a hole in the brain contributed to a stroke, and is usually found in older patients 60-65. Can anyone please explain what exactly a lacunar infarct is? My husband is also an Active Duty Army Service Member, does this mean he is non-deployable? I appreciate any and all answers. Thank you

1.Lacunar infarcts are small deep infarcts in the distal distribution of penetrating vessels
2.They result from occlusion of one of the small penetrating end arteries at the base of the brain and are due to fibrinoid degeneration.
3.Lacunar infarcts account for 25% of all ischemic strokes.
Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of lacunar infarcts followed by emboli.
4.There are few differentials to consider and evaluate further as keeping age in mind, need to evaluate any blood related cause.
5.needs further evaluation with blood workup and other possible cause, if confirm of risk factor then some rest might be needed, as his job can be hectic. But as i said needs further find out the cause, and medications also be given which helps. Good luck.
