What Does It Mean By Exposed To Herpes Virus But Not Active?

I had an std blood test done. I got a voicemail today saying that everything came back negative, except herpes simplex virus came back as me having antibodies. She said it was negative except I had antibodies so I had been exposed to the virus, but it was not active. I am wondering if this means I was merely at risk and dodged a bullet, or if i now HAVE herpes and it is just not on a flare up. I would like to know if I must now be on the lookout for flare ups, and if this is something I need to notify future partners of, or if I just dodged a bullet.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

The test result suggests that you are infected with the virus, though you don't show any active lesions of it.
Herpes virus once acquired stays inside the body for the rest of life.
The virus stays dormant inside the body. However, from time to time the virus may start multiplying and then forms skin lesions.
During an active episode which suggest active viral multiplication, body may produce IgM antibodies, however, at other times the body usually has circulating IgG antibodies and it suggests an old infection that was acquired sometimes in the past and is dormant.
Since in your case the result has come back as positive for herpes virus but not active, therefore you must have only had circulating IgG and was negative for IgM at that time.
