What Does High Level Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Indicate?

My doctor has prescribed levothyroxine because my TSH level is at 7.24. (Normal level 0.46-4.68ulU/ml). The report that comes with the prescription states that this medicine is a thyroid used for treating low thyroid hormone levels. If my thyroid stimulating hormone level is high does that mean that I have low thyroid hormones?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Your condition is probably sub-clinical hypothyroidism. Here TSH is slightly elevated (Between 5 and 10 uIU/ml) and T3, T4 is normal. Usually the thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) levels start decreasing once TSH goes above 10 miu/ml.

The treatment in subclinical hypothyroidism depends on severl fctors

1. Presence of thyroid swelling (goiter) - Yes / No
2. Elevated anti thyroid antibodies - Yes / No
3. Pregnancy / planning for pregnancy - Yes / No
4. Presence of elevated cholesterol - Yes / No

If any of the above question is yes, we have to start on thyroid hormone replacement.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
With warm regards,
