What Does Excessive Weight Loss Indicate?

I am worried about my wife, she is an afro american age 62,she has been seeing a speciallist for a thyroid condition and the medication she takes for that seem to work just fine. My main concern is her liver. her doctor told her she shouldn t drink no more than 2 glasses of red wine a week. I keep up with the amount of wine she drinks because I know she is an alcohalic. She drinks 12 gallens of white envenzale wine a month, she is also a borderline dibetic according to her doctor. She is 6 feet tall and her normal weight is betwee 160and170 lbs,she has been loosing weight in the last 3 months now she weights between 130 and 140 lbs she is just skin and bones and not gaining an oz. I think one reason why she drinks so much is because she likes to get high off of weed everyday, she has out grown the weed and she has to have the wine to stretch the high. I don t smoke and I don t know what kind of weed she smokes but I do know it cost her around $400.00 a month. I am her husban Billy Coleman and I love her very, very much but I am afraid she might not be around a whole lot longer if she doesn t give up the alcohol. So can you tell me what I can do to help her and a list of what can happen to her if she dosen;t quit. I talked to her about rehab and aa it just goes threw 1 ear and out the other.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your wife is a chronic alcoholic and smoker and a borderline diabetic.
She had gross weight loss.
I understand what pain you might be going through but your wife needs a lot of deaddiction counseling and simultaneously evaluation to rule out liver cirrhosis, in which there may be weight loss but just check for staging of cirrhosis.
Consult a physician for admission and best further treatment.
Please consult the doctor at the earliest for best treatment results.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
