What Does Enlarged Fetal Gallbladder Mean?

Hello I am 33 weeks and 3 days pregnant. My dr ordered a growth us at 32 weeks. When I met with her today she told me that my baby has a prominent gallbladder (enlarged). She did not seem too concerned but ordered another ultrasound at 36 weeks. I am very worried and if it does show that his gallbladder is in fact enlarged what could that mean and would he have health problems or would he be normal? I have looked up a few things and it said something about a chromosomal defect associated with this. I am worried and just want to know the causes and what could happen.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Nothing much to worry as it is a normal variant and commonly seen in antenatal ultrasounds. You can do a repeat ultrasound after two weeks to assess whether the problem persist or not. The chromosomal anomaly you are mentioned is a study conducted in the past it concluded that at antenatal scan does not appear to be associated with a substantially increased risk of chromosomal aneuploidy or biliary tract malformation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
