General & Family Physician 's  Response
Cervix is the bottom portion of uterus which in pregnancy will be maintaining its pre pregnancy dimensions and tone while uterus will enlarge and its muscle tone reduces to accomodate growing foetus. cervix connects uterine body with vagina.just before delivery cervix starts to widen its opening and dr can know by doing per vaginal examination and know how much it is dilated which is required for vaginal delivery of foetus .during pregnancy it should not be dilated and cant admit even one finger during vaginal examination( can be made out in USG) is called closed cervix which is essential to maintain foetus in uterus,if its tone is less and dilated its called cervical incompetence and stitches are done and pregnant is advised strict bed rest otherwise miscarriage occurs.
