What does chronic pain in the left thumb indicate?

I have chronic pain at the base of my left thumb on the inside. it was off and on for years, but has been constant for about 8 years. it really hurts playing golf, and I wear a special pad to be able to play. I ve been told it tendonitis, but the last doctor told me he thinks it s a ligament issue. he said the surgery would probably require transplanting from another body part, and wasn t sure I would want to do it. Any thoughts? I can tolerate it ok for everyday stuff, but golf is very painful. I like to play golf.

Hello,

If there is any ligament injury for so long and it has not healed then its better to get it fixed up rather than suffering from pain after surgery recovery will be soon. Since you say you need to play golf and like it. If you want to again play happily without any pains then surgery would worth it. If you leave this the pain would never get better with any medication though you can try some anti-inflammatory medication and analgesics if severe pain but it might not work as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
