What Does Breathlessness When Suffering From Renal Cell Carcinoma Indicate?

Hi, I am a 58 year old male, with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, diagnosed in 2006. I have had a number of treatments, the most recent being an application of Interleukin-2 a one treatment over a five day in-patient session. Following this I suffered from shortness of breath and remained in hospital for a further week with little improvement. I was prescribed Fluconizole but this has no noticeable effect. There is a non-painful, persistent and generally non-productive cough, although a couple of times I have brought up what appears to be a small worm-shaped mucous coated blood clot, maybe an inch and a half long. I am breathless with the smallest exertion, although I recover quickly and my Ventolin helps. Cause of the breathlessness and suggested possible remedy? I am due for a second dose of Interleukin-2 but they will not administer it until the breathlessness issue is resolved. Many thanks. Graeme Hills.

Hello,

The following may be causes of your shortness of breath:
1) Metastatic cancer of lungs
2) Tuberculosis
3) Pneumonia
4) COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
5) Bronchiectasis
6) Bronchial asthma
7) Any cardiac causes like angina, congestive cardiac failure, myocardial infarction etc.

You need to have a detailed clinical examination and the following investigations are necessary:
1) Chest X-ray
2) Sputum examination
3) Complete blood picture
4) ESR, CRP
5) ECG

Hello,

The following are few causes of your shortness of breath:
1) Interleukin 2 can cause lung disorders in 11-24% of cases
2) Metastatic spread of tumor to lungs
3) Arrhythmias and cough occur in about 10% of patients treated with interleukin 2
4) Any heart causes like arrhythmias, tachycardia or cardiac tamponade
5) Super added infection of lungs

The most important is to check for metastatic tumors of lung. Please do discuss about the above conditions with your oncologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
