What does bone scan mean and what checking is done during the scan ?

My MRI showed Hyperactivity in my bone marrow. I am now haveing a boane Scan. What does this mean or what could they be looking for. I am a 49 year old female. 5 9 171. My MRI showed Hyperactivity in my bone marrow in my knee . I am now going for a bone scan . What does this mean and what are they checking for?
