What Does Bilirubin Levels In The Test Report Suggest?

Hello,
I've had elevated total Bilirubin for some time. Most of my physicians do not seem to pay too much attention and a couple say that my other numbers are fine. The first to mention it in 2000, after finding out I do not use alcohol, said it might be just where this number reads. I discovered my high range in 2000, when I had a complete physical, blood work, etc. I am a healthy, a bit overweight (56 year old, 195 lbs @ 5' 8" Native American male). I do not drink alcohol, no hepatitis, no gallstones (but haven't been checked and they run in my family, although there have been times I have gotten very sick, nauseated, and vomited after a fatty meal, like greasy steak, (which means I don't do this often) and could not eat for a couple of days. I was wondering how much influence triglycercides levels and gallstones have on bilirubin levels and what my numbers mean. I am especially interested in my normal bilirubin reading in Feb 2005. Total Bilirubin by year:2003: T Bili: 1.59 (0 - 1.5) MG/dL; Triglyceride-SFIH 159 mg/dL (30 - 200)2005 (Feb): T. Bili: 0.9 (0.2 - 1.3) Only in range reading that I know of. AST (SGOT): 21 and ALT (SGPT): 58 < 45 U/L Triglycerides 411 MG/DL2005 (November): T. Bili: 1.6 (0.2 - 1.3) MG/DL Triglycerides: 214 MG/DL2008: T. Bili: 1.5 (0.1 - 1.2)Triglycerides: no reading2008: T. Bili: 1.5 (0.2 - 1.3) MG/DL Triglycerides: 214

Hi there,

Your total bilirubin is ever so mild elevated If I'm following correctly, the highest it's been is 1.6, which is not significantly elevated at all. I wouldn't worry about this number. Changes in the range of this magnitude are not significant. If your bilirubin continued to go up significantly, from 2 to 4 to 7, then I'd be very worried you'd have some problem with your liver, gallbladder, or pancreas, but with the numbers you are giving her, I wouldn't be worried about that at all. 1.6 is not a significant elevation of bilirubin. I usually don't worry until it starts to get over 2, and I deal with a lot of these patients as a general surgeon.

I wouldn't worry about this at all.

I hope this is helpful, and I hope I have answered your questions.
