nobody really knows what it is or why it happens. it is thought to be damage to tiny bridging blood vessels between large vessel territories by ischemia or lack of blood flow because it is most
severe in people with high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. it is known to be the cause of what was previously called vascular dementia but only in its severest form. most of the time it is an asymptomatic finding seen on MRI .
