What Does An MRI Showing Broad Base Posterior Disc Bulge Suggest?

My daughter just had an MRI of the Lumbar Spine and results as follows: L5 - S1 There is broad-based posterior disc bulge indenting the ventral tecal sac and causing mild central canal stenosis. L4 - L5 There is type II Modic endplate changes. There is a right asymmetric posterior disc protrusion resulting in severe central canal stenosis and bilateral neural foramina narrowing. The most posterior aspect of the herniated dis chows mild contrast enhancement indicative of fibrotic component.

Neurologist, Surgical 's  Response
Hello,

These MRI findings indicate that there are protrusions of the intervertebral discs in two levels of the lumbar spine.

The narrowing at the L5-S1 level is mild, at the L4-L5 level is severe and nerves are compressed as well.

Mild contrast enhancement means that there are inflammatory changes in the disc.

It depends on the symptoms and neurological findings, however, the severe stenosis at L4-L5 may require surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
