What Does A Tender Spot On The Right Side Of The Windpipe Indicate?

about 3 days ago, I developed a very tender spot to the right of my windpipe, directly where you can feel the pulse. It came on suddenly, with no unusual activity or injury. It is painful to yawn, and feels difficult to cough (also have a lingering cough of unknown origin). When left alone, it subsides to a barely there discomfort, but yawning, coughing or trying to manipulate the area causes significant pain. thoughts?

Hello,

There are two possible causes of the painful lump on the neck. One is if it is a lymphnode and this can get swollen in case you have an infection in the upper respiratory tract like throat and mouth or if you have problems with your teeth. Normally a lymphnode that is there for a few days and is painful is not dangerous as long as it is smaller then 2 cm in diameter you should just observe it in the next few days. If it is not getting better in a week or is growing and getting more then 2 cm in diameter then you will need to see your doctor.

The other possible cause is a muscular pain due to a certain movement that might have hurt some muscular fiber and sometimes a lump at the area of the muscle might be felt and is tender. This is not dangerous, it should feel better in a few days.

In both cases taking some paracetamol and ibuprofen and local warm compresses might help you feel better and if no improvement in 7-10 days or any worsening please see your doctor.

I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
