What Does A Swollen Salivary Gland Indicate?

Hi, I am currently in Brazil and had a swollen saliva gland. The doctors here thought I had mumps so they did a amylase test. The result was 754. I know that this is really high but does it confirm that it is mumps. I also read that it could be a result of any salivary gland infection.

I can understand your concern. You are right in your knowledge that amylase activity is high in presence of any salivary gland or pancreatic infection and not just in the presence of mumps.

However, as you have been to the doctor, clinical examination of the swelling along with other symptoms along with this test can almost confirm presence of mumps. Thus, chances are high that you are suffering from mumps.

I suggest that you should continue with the treatment prescribed by the doctor and wait for 7-10 days for the swelling to subside.
