What Does A Swollen And Painful Bump Over Areola Indicate?

Hello, I noticed a swollen painful bump over my areola a week or so go. I went to the doctor and they gave me antibiotics but now the area has started leaking pus and blood out of two tiny holes..should I keep taking my antibiotics and hope it clears up or go back to the doctor?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

This painful bump is a furuncle, commonly known as a boil. A furuncle is a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI's).
I suggest you to continue with Oral antibiotics for a week.
My choice of Oral antibiotics would be either from a penicillin group e.g flucloxacillin Or from a cephalosporin group e.g cephalexin.
If the bump is oozing pus, clean the area after washing your hands with a sterile gauze piece dipped in an antiseptic e.g betadine solution.
In addition to Oral antibiotic you may use an OTC topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily.
An OTC pain killer e.g ibuprofen 400 mg twice daily will provide symptomatic relief from pain.
If the bump does'nt respond as expected Or increases in size and becomes more painful Or if you develop systemic symptoms like fever, likely it would have progressed to an abscess stage, which needs to be drained.

Regards
