What Does A Painful Lump On The Left Side Of The Neck Indicate?

My question is that I woke up yesterday with a rather 'painful' lump on the left side of my neck. The pain seemed to come and go during the day. Today when I woke up it 'seems' to have gotten just a little larger and is still painful. I really don't think that I have injured my neck recently.
