What Does A Painful Bruise On The Left Hand Indicate?

For the last month and a half the top of my left hand feels bruised off and on. It can be fine all day then all of a sudden it hurts like I hit it on something. This can go on from anywhere to 20mins to hours. Then it might be fine for a few days and starts all over again. There are no marks, no hardness. I haven t hit it on anything and I m right handed.
