Hello dear friend..Your doctor has taken a right decision to remove the mole and examine it under the microscope.
A mole is a concern if it
a) increase in size (>6mm)
b) change in colour
c)change in shape
d)change in thickness
e)any new pigmented areas appear around an already existing mole(satellite lesions)
f)tingling sensation/discharge from mole/itching over the mole
Since you have mentioned an increase in size, it is always better to remove and be on a safer side.
