What Does A Hematoma On The Shin Indicate?

I have a large hematoma on my lower shin. This is week three and the bruises have lessened but mr foot is still so swollen that I have only one shoe (Dansco) fits with no room to wear a sock. My entire leg below the knee is swollen and the skin from my toes to my shin is pulled so tight it hurts. Also, the hematoma causes constant pain. Is this normal after three weeks? I saw my PA the day after the injury, had X-rays,and a week later saw her again and nothing showed. Do I need to be seen by my primary care doctor?

Hi,

How do you know that what is causing your swelling and pain is a hematoma? Did you have an accident? Do you have fever which suggests an infection?

A blood clot in one of the veins in your leg can cause swelling and pain. You need to be evaluated by your primary care doctor. He/she may order more tests. Please don't wait. Make appointment and go as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
