What Does A Black Spot On Tongue Indicate?

I have a black spot on my tongue for more than 3 years. It didn't grow significantly and never hurts. While doing general oral clean up, I asked my dentist about it. But she said don't worry if it's not hurting. Two days before it did bleed..3-4 drops. Now i am worried about it.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain a small black spot on tongue can be due to natural hyper-pigmentation caused due to excessive melanin deposition and it is completely harmless..

It can also be due to a condition known as black hairy tongue which can occur due to fungal infection, alcohol consumption, dry mouth, tobacco chewing and smoking etc.
It can form small patches over the tongue and gradually cover the whole of tongue..

In your case it seems to be a natural hyper-pigmentation and bleeding can be just due to some trauma or excessive cleaning of the region in-order to clean it and just a few drops of blood doesn't seems to be a sign of something serious..

I would suggest you not to traumatize the black patch area of the tongue and in case it is not painful and there is no raised patch and it does not even grow it is natural pigmentation and you can use Over the counter products containing Kojic acid, calcium, azelaic acid can help in lightening the dark spot..

In case if there is formation of a raised patch or there is excessive bleeding or repeated episode of bleeding or increase in number and size of spots then consultation with an oral pathologist should be done..

Hope this information helps..
