What Does A Bald Spot On The Scalp Indicate?

I have thick healthy hair but it hasn t always been like this. I was sick after having my two children 14 years ago. After a few years I noticed my hair was thing then I discovered a bald spot on the top of my head. It has been there for at least 7 years if not longer. It is the size of a quarter and smooth and round. It it slightly linked than my other scalp skin but not by much. Most people wouldn t know the difference but I check the spot alot. My hair on the rest of my head has grown back thick and healthy like when I was young but not this spot. I don t have money to even go see a doctor about this. No other spots anywhere on my body. I can live with this if I have to but it would be nice to get a little help. Would to just be able to wear my hair down!! Do you think I have permanent damage here? Is there affordable help for this?

hello there and thanks for writing to HCM
i have read your history and understand your concern.

how old are you?are you on any medications?what sickness did you have 14years back?any other medical history?have you checked for thyroid function?any family history?are your nails healthy?
these details would have helped

Coming to the query,From your description of a small, smooth patch of hair loss it points towards a diagnosis of alopecia areata according to me.
Its common under 20years of age but can affect any age.Its basically our immunity affecting and attacking our hair follicles.

if this is the case, fortunately for you,it is not permanent.
i would recommend ,getting a thyroid function test done and hair and scalp
analysis done to rule out thyroid disorders and dandruff

usually the hair slowly grows back;most common treatment for patchy hair loss is many injections of corticosteroids into the scalp or skin, about 1 cm apart, every 4 to 6 weeks can be tried

Minoxidil also is effective along with corticosteroids and you can even try different styles for covering the patch temporarily.
If you seborrhoeic dermatitis or dandruff, ketoconazole shampoo on scalp thrice a week for a month will help
have a healthy diet and plenty of water and take a multivitamin tablet daily.

Hope it helps and relieves your concern.followup if needed.good day.
