What Do Tingling Sensation And Water Retention In The Feet Indicate?

My husband fell and was on norco for broken ribs, he started to retain water in his feet along with a tingling sensation. He stopped the norco several days ago and is still retaining water in his feet and has the tingling sensation in his feet and hands. Is this normal and will it eventually go away. He’s also a diabetic. This seemed to happen when taking the pain medication

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your husband had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to withdrawal effects of Norco as far as tingling is concerned However with history of diabetes, chances of peripheral neuropathy does exist which at times get masked when on never pain suppressants like Norco or Gabapentin etc. Gradual withdrawal is recommended but a detailed neurological examination of legs is a must. Supplements for B12 and folic acid may also help.
As far as retaining water is concerned, it's a serious concern with the history and should be worked up with renal and liver functions as well as urinalysis to rule out any protein leak which can also occur with diabetes and history of pain medicines so should be ruled out. Echocardiogram may also be needed to look for heart functions. Meanwhile taking diuretics in low dose may help to overcome the swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
