I recently had a colonoscopy to check why I am having mild stomach distention and mild stomach pain...the result was an aphthous ulcer was found in the rectum and sigmoid colon. It was scattered. retroflexed views in the rectum revealed no abnormalities. What does this all mean? I am in my 60s and had been on pain meds due to many recent back surgeries that had failed...I am no longer on pain meds, but I still have problems with constipation and am on miralax..BMs relieve the bloated feeling after eating but the distention is still there..It is mild and is more comfortable to me when I'm laying down or sitting back in a chair...I've lost 12 pounds since this all started in early June 2011, .

Pathologist and Microbiologist, Dr. Jyothi B L's Response
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. No major abnormalities noted in colonoscopy. Only a superficial mucous ulcer seen. Not to worry. 2. Reduced fiber diet possibly leading onto constipation. Increase digestable fiber to improve bowel movements and also reduce gas formation. 3. Take a nutritional diet and it will improve within two weeks. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
