What Do Rashes On Trunk Area Indicate?

I am a 48 year old female. This morning I woke up with hives on my trunk which spread to the rest of my body including my face and neck. I have large lumps on either side of the back of my neck which I assume are enlarged lymph nodes. They are not painful to the touch. I took 5ml of hydrocodone cough medicine around 8 pm yesterday. The only other thing out of the ordinary I did was visit a petting zoo with goats, ducks, chickens, peacocks, and deer. I do not have a fever. I took Claritin within 30 minutes of waking up around 8 am this morning. I have taken 25mg of Benadryl at 11, 1, and 5 today. I still have hives.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

Acute hives or urticaria usually presents as itchy welts that can be widely distributed over the body.
Acute urticaria is usually allergic and it can be induced either by drugs, food and food preservatives, infection etc.
Since you probably have a viral cold and cough for which you took the antitussive preparation therefore viral infection this might be the cause of your urticaria.
If I was the treating doctor I would have started you on a short course of an Oral steroid e.g methylprednisolone for a week.
Steroids are antiinflammatory and antiallergics and bring about rapid relief in hives.
Besides oral steroids, you may continue with tab loratadine, twice daily for a week.
Topically you may use an anti-itch cream Or lotion for symptomatic relief.

Regards
