What Do Protruding Veins Behind The Thighs Indicate?

I have bad large veins popping out of my left leg on the back of my thigh. My leg has hurt with large shooting pains, down my leg and knee pain since Friday evening. My foot tingles and falls asleep at random times. Also is warm to touch at times and always feels heavier than the other leg. The swelling and veins sticking out is double what the other leg is. Do I need to go to the er?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
hi sir/mam,i'm happy to see a detailed description of symptoms which really help doctors.thanks a lot.your symptoms are due to varicose veins in left leg.in my clinic,i manage my patients with conservative therapy initially.if no improvement, then i go for other hospital based options.most of them get relived with the following conservative measures:
1)avoid long periods of standing or sitting.
2)elevation of the affected limb for maximum time even when you are sitting and sleeping.
3)if you are overweight or obese, reduction of weight helps you a lot in this regard.
4)regular exercise is also recommended which helps in avoiding pooling of blood in the lower extremities and increases circulation.
5)avoid wearing tight clothing.
6)COMPRESSION STOCKINGS are the main stay of treatment.you can get them from any pharmacy nearby.
the above list may be exhaustive but very useful.if you dont have any response to the above measures, you can go for the next level of therapy with the consultation of a surgeon.other modalities which are in practice for resistant cases are as follows:
1)sclerotherapy(no anesthesia is required and an office procedure)
2)laser assisted procedures(no incision or needles required)
3)radiofrequency ablation technique.(for large varicose veins)
4)high ligation and vein stripping.
i wish you get relief with conservative measures itself.hope my answer is clear enough.any further doubts, please write to us.its my pleasure to be of any help to you.thank you.take care.bye.
