What Do Pressure In The Chest And Shortness Of Breath Indicate?

Hi. I think I swallowed a piece of bread into my trachea? Is that possible? I don t think it is in the esophagus (spelling??). This happened last night, I coughed hard for a while but I don t think it came up. This morning, I woke up and started coughing. Now I have some tightness in the chest and at time short of breath.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A big bread gone down trachea would cause immediate cough reflex till the thing is thrown out.

A big chunk in esophagus would though travel down in stomach; the trauma caused still remains giving a feeling if something being impacted. The pressure is chest is not common in such CSE. Again accompaniment with short breath is unusual.

It seems more like heart symptom. Please consult a cardiologist to exclude/find any cardiac problem followed by specific treatment. If it is excluded-simple treatment with bland liquids/diet with antacid like Gelusil/cold milk would help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
