What Do My Blood And Urine Test Results Indicate?

i was on prednisone for about 9 days(for breathing problems and pneumonia). my last dose was on July 14th. I tested positive non fasting on Monday 7/20 for glucose in urine. I fasted last night repeated urine tests and blood work at dr office today. Glucose still in urine. Fasting glucose blood level 164. 3 month ayi was 6.24. I have been pre diabetic for about 2 years. Could prednisone still be in my system 8 days later causing elevation? Or am I diabetic? Should I be treated with medication now for diabetes? thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello.
thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern. One of the most common side effects of Prednisone (corticosteroid) is elevated blood sugar levels especially in individuals with Pre-diabetes or impaired Glucose tolerance. Blood sugar levels increase throughout the course of steroid intake and may remain elevated for a period of days to weeks after stopping the medicine. Since you are pre-diabetic, elevated levels are seen even 8 days later. however sugar levels should come down at least after two weeks.
I suggest you to keep checking your blood sugar levels, wait for one more week to allow the levels to come down. If the sugar levels continue to be high even after one week I suggest you to consult your treating doctor and plan your treatment. hope my answer helped. thank you.
