What do lumps on the ankles indicate?

I’ve been told that the large lumps on the outsides of both ankles are lipomas. I’ve also been told that surgery to remove them would be risky because nerves and blood vessels run through them. My right ankle is now so big that wearing shoes which touch this area causes pain. And now my left pinky toe is numb- wondering if pressure from the ankle lipoma could be causing the left toe numbness.
