Hi - My 85 year mother (who is typically in great health and active) is recovering from a bought with pneumonia. She has been to the doctor and now he is checking and rechecking her blood due to low sodium levels. What could this mean? She does drink a lot of water (at least 64 oz a day). she takes a few medications one for bp the other for macular degeneration and I think a cholesterol drug. Thank you for your input.

What Do Low Sodium Levels Indicate?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. If she is taking loop diuretics, they may cause hypokalemia or hyponatremia. Fluid retention may cause hyponatremia or syndrome of in appropriate ADH or kidney dysfunction etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. First please confirm what type of hyponatremia she is having, for example hypovolemia or euvolemic or hypervolemic etc. Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly. Take care.
