What Do Itchy Red Rashes On The Back, Stomach And Arms Indicate?

my dad is 84 year old and has a red itchy rash on his back . stomach, and arms the doctor took a sample and said it is a imflamation. not sure what that means we are not able to get him to a dermatologist for about a month any idea s what it could be and what do use on it for the itch?
