Is she a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian? Does she have a healthy appetite? People with a poor appetite often have low Hb levels. So make sure she eats adequately. Considering the fact she has diabetes, you need to include foods rich in iron but avoid those which will increase sugar levels significantly. Foods which can be taken are Green leafy vegetables like spinach which has iron, drumstick, amaranth leaves. Include vitamin C rich foods alongwith iron rich foods as iron from vegetarian sources is poorly absorbed. So inclusion of vitamin C rich foods alongwith them will increase iron absorption in the body. other foods like whole bengal gram (chana), rice flakes (chiwda), bajra flour are also good sources of iron. if she is a non vegetarian, then red meat especially liver is a rich source of iron can be given to her. Other ways by which you can increase iron intake through foods is by cooking acidic foods like tomatoes in an iron pot/vessel. Use of iron vessels for cooking/ iron knife for cutting will increase iron content of foods.
