What Course Of Treatment Should Be Given For Cushing’s Syndrome?

Hi I was diagnosed with crushing syndrome 3 years ago the tumour was on my left adrenal and the adrenal was removed. My right adrenal had gone to sleep as the left had been producing so much cortisol. I am now dependant on hydrocortisone three years later it is still not working, do you know of any treatments that can help kick start the adrenal. Many thanks

Hello,

Cushing's syndrome is caused by constant, high levels of cortisol in the body. In your case, it is caused by the overproduction of cortisol by the tumor in the left adrenal gland.

The problem is that this excess of cortisol production suppress the function of the other gland(the right adrenal in your case).

For this reason, it is necessary the hydrocortisone therapy after the surgery of the left adrenal.

Generally, the remnant adrenal gland will return to normal function within some months-one year.

The only treatment that is necessary and vital for you, in your circumstances is Hydrocortisone.

There is no specific treatment that can help kick start the adrenal. I suggest these tips that may be helpful to reduce adrenal fatigue stress:

-Sleep 8-10 h a night
-avoid sleeping late and stay on a regular sleep cycle.
-Minimize work and relational stress however possible
-Eat healthily
-exercise every day

And last advice but not the least: Don't forget to increase the hydrocortisone doses when you are under stress.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
